A NATIONAL PARK EXPLORED ON FOOT

Udzungwa Mountains National Park offers a completely different experience from Tanzania’s traditional safari parks.

There are no regular game-drive routes through the park. Instead, visitors explore the forest on foot with an authorised guide.

The landscape includes tropical rainforest, mountain forest, waterfalls and viewpoints across the Kilombero Valley. The park forms part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, an area known for its exceptional variety of plants, birds and animals.

Udzungwa is particularly rewarding for active travellers who want to add hiking and nature to a safari itinerary.

THE SANJE WATERFALLS HIKE

The Sanje Waterfalls hike is the main Udzungwa experience included in our itineraries.

The trail climbs through the forest towards a series of waterfalls and viewpoints. Along the way, you may encounter monkeys, birds, butterflies and a wide variety of plants.

The complete route is approximately six kilometres and usually takes four to five hours. It includes an elevation gain of around 450 metres, with several steep and uneven sections.

From the viewpoints, you can look across the Kilombero Valley and see the main waterfall descending from the forested escarpment. Depending on water levels and local conditions, it may also be possible to swim in one of the natural pools.

We normally arrange the hike as a full-day excursion from Mikumi. The programme includes private road transport, an authorised guide and time for a packed lunch.

The exact starting time and route can be adjusted according to your accommodation, fitness level, weather and current park conditions.

HOW DIFFICULT IS THE SANJE HIKE?

The Sanje Waterfalls hike requires a reasonable level of fitness.

Parts of the trail are steep, and the combination of heat, humidity and climbing can make the hike more demanding than the distance alone suggests. During or after rainfall, sections of the trail may become muddy and slippery.

We recommend wearing proper walking shoes with good grip and bringing comfortable clothing, sun protection and sufficient water.

Tell us about your hiking experience, fitness level and the ages of any children travelling with you. We can then advise whether Sanje is suitable or discuss another option.

OTHER HIKES IN UDZUNGWA

Udzungwa has several walking routes of different lengths and difficulty levels.

Shorter forest walks may be possible for travellers who do not want to complete the full Sanje route. Longer day hikes can be arranged for experienced walkers who would like to explore deeper into the mountains.

Multi-day treks with camping inside the national park also exist. These require more preparation, equipment, porters and suitable weather conditions.

Our standard programmes focus on the Sanje Waterfalls day hike. If you are specifically interested in a longer trek, we can check the available routes and arrangements for your travel dates.

PRIMATES AND BIRDLIFE

Udzungwa is known for its biological diversity and is home to several primate species.

Monkeys that may be encountered include the Udzungwa red colobus and Sanje mangabey. These species live in the forest and move freely, so sightings cannot be guaranteed.

The park and surrounding valley are also excellent for birdwatching. Hornbills, forest birds, waterbirds and numerous other species can be observed depending on the habitat and season.

A walk in Udzungwa is less about searching for large animals and more about experiencing the forest, waterfalls, plants, primates and smaller details of the ecosystem.

ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE THE NATIONAL PARK

Travellers who stay near Udzungwa can add activities in the surrounding Kilombero Valley.

Staying near Udzungwa therefore makes most sense when you want more than the Sanje hike alone.

CYCLING

Cycle through the flat Kilombero Valley with a local guide, passing villages, farms, sugar plantations and open landscapes. The cycling is generally easy, although some routes can become muddy after rainfall.

The tour can be combined with a village visit, rubber plantation or Magombera Monkey Forest, offering opportunities for photography and a closer look at rural life in Tanzania.

CANOE

Explore the Kilombero River in a traditional dugout canoe accompanied by an experienced local guide.

The river is particularly rewarding for birdwatching, with possible sightings of waterbirds such as the Kilombero weaver. Hippos and monitor lizards may also be encountered, although wildlife sightings depend on local conditions.

MANG’ULA VILLAGE TOUR

Explore Mang’ula with a local guide and experience everyday life in a rural community at the foot of the Udzungwa Mountains.

Walk past markets, small shops, workshops and rice mills before continuing into the quieter residential and farming areas surrounding the village.

ifakara.jpeg

IFAKARA MARKET

Visit Ifakara, the main town of the Kilombero Valley, and explore its lively market, local shops and busy streets.

The excursion can include the Ifakara Women Weavers Association, where you can see locally made textiles, and a visit to the Kilombero River for birdwatching and photography.

RUBBER PLANTATION

Visit a local rubber plantation and learn how natural rubber is produced.

A guide explains the process from planting the trees and collecting the latex to preparing the raw material for further processing. This educational half-day activity is particularly suitable for families.

magombera.jpeg

MAGOMBERA MONKEY FOREST

Magombera is a small forest area surrounded by farmland and sugar plantations in the Kilombero Valley.

The forest supports a rich variety of birds and primates, including the endemic Udzungwa red colobus. It can be visited during a half-day excursion by bicycle or vehicle, although wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.

VISITING UDZUNGWA FROM MIKUMI

Most of our guests visit Udzungwa as a full-day excursion from Mikumi.

The drive from the Mikumi area to Udzungwa normally takes approximately two and a half hours in each direction.

An early departure allows time for the Sanje Waterfalls hike before returning to Mikumi in the late afternoon or evening.

This option works well because you can stay at the same accommodation and combine game drives in Mikumi with one full day of hiking.

Our four-day Mikumi and Udzungwa itinerary includes both experiences without requiring a separate overnight stay near Udzungwa.

SHOULD YOU STAY NEAR UDZUNGWA?

An overnight stay near Udzungwa is possible, but it is not necessary for the standard Sanje Waterfalls excursion.

Staying near the park allows you to begin your hike earlier and creates time for cycling, birdwatching, village visits or other activities in the Kilombero Valley.

However, staying near Udzungwa does not shorten the onward journey towards Ruaha. The drive from Udzungwa towards Ruaha is longer than travelling to Ruaha from Mikumi because Udzungwa lies away from the main route.

For itineraries continuing towards Iringa and Ruaha, a day excursion from Mikumi is therefore often the most practical choice.

We will compare both options according to your wider route and interests.

WHERE TO STAY

Accommodation is available outside Udzungwa Mountains National Park. Inside the park, overnight stays are limited to camping arrangements connected to longer treks.

Hondo Hondo is situated near the boundary of Udzungwa Mountains National Park. The camp offers en-suite safari tents, simpler traditional bandas with shared facilities and a campsite. Its forest setting makes it particularly attractive for birdwatching and observing monkeys around the grounds. Guided cycling, village visits, nature walks and other local activities can be arranged from the camp.

Udzungwa Falls Lodge is a larger and more conventional lodge in the Udzungwa area. It offers en-suite rooms, a restaurant and a swimming pool. This can be a practical option for families and travellers who prefer a hotel-style room while staying close to the national park.

Accommodation availability, room types and rates depend on your travel dates. We include the most suitable option in your personalised quotation.

Day hikes in Udzungwa can be arranged with start and end in the accommodations just outside of Mikumi National Park as well. If you don't wish to spend multiple days around Udzungwa Mountains, you can choose to stay in Mikumi.

HOW TO REACH UDZUNGWA MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK

MIKUMI (134 of 183).jpg

FROM MIKUMI

The most practical route is to combine Udzungwa with Mikumi National Park.

Private road transport between the Mikumi area and Udzungwa takes approximately two and a half hours each way. This makes a full-day excursion possible without changing accommodation.

SGR.jpeg

FROM DAR ES SALAAM OR MOROGORO

Udzungwa can be reached by private road transport through Morogoro and Mikumi.

The SGR train can shorten the first part of the journey from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro. A private vehicle is still required from Morogoro to Udzungwa because the train does not travel to the national park.

For a comfortable itinerary, we normally include Udzungwa as part of a longer route rather than travelling from Dar es Salaam and back within a single day.

FROM ZANZIBAR

From Zanzibar, you can travel to Dar es Salaam by ferry or domestic flight and continue towards Morogoro, Mikumi and Udzungwa.

We can arrange your Zanzibar hotel transfer, ferry or flight, SGR ticket where suitable and all required private road transport.

WHEN TO VISIT UDZUNGWA

JUNE TO OCTOBER

The dry season generally provides the easiest hiking conditions.

Trails are normally less muddy, although the waterfall may carry less water towards the end of the dry season. Temperatures can still feel warm and humid during the climb.

NOVEMBER TO FEBRUARY

The landscape becomes greener, and occasional rainfall can increase the flow of the waterfalls.

Hiking is normally still possible, but rain can make the trail slippery. Birdlife and forest vegetation can be especially rewarding during this period.

MARCH TO MAY

The long rains usually occur during these months.

The waterfalls can be impressive, but trails may become wet, muddy and more difficult. Heavy rainfall can affect road access and hiking arrangements.

We check the weather, road conditions and park access before confirming your visit.

COMBINING UDZUNGWA WITH OTHER DESTINATIONS

DAR ES SALAAM

A night or city tour in Dar es Salaam can be added before or after the hike. This is particularly useful when connecting with a ferry, domestic flight or international flight.

bootsafari.jpg

NYERERE NATIONAL PARK

Udzungwa and Nyerere can be combined within a longer Southern Tanzania itinerary.

Because the road journey between the areas is substantial, this combination requires sufficient time and may work best when Mikumi or Morogoro is also included.

mikumi

MIKUMI NATIONAL PARK

Mikumi and Udzungwa are the easiest and most popular combination.

Game drives on the open plains of Mikumi can be followed by a full day of rainforest hiking and waterfalls in Udzungwa.

Lioness In The Wild

IRINGA AND RUAHA

Udzungwa can form part of a longer overland journey towards Iringa and Ruaha.

However, Udzungwa is not situated directly on the fastest route. Staying near Udzungwa makes the onward journey longer than departing for Iringa and Ruaha from Mikumi.

We therefore plan this combination carefully and include suitable overnight stops.

Uluguru_Mountains_view_from_Morogoro_Town.jpg

ULUGURU MOUNTAINS

Morogoro can be included before or after Mikumi and Udzungwa.

This creates an active itinerary combining the Uluguru Mountains, safari, rainforest and waterfalls.

Udzungwa offers a different hiking experience from the Uluguru Mountains. Uluguru combines mountain scenery with village life and cultural encounters, while Udzungwa is a protected forest area focused on nature, wildlife and waterfalls.

pemba.jpg

ZANZIBAR, PEMBA AND MAFIA

After visiting Mikumi and Udzungwa, you can return to Dar es Salaam and continue to one of the islands by ferry or domestic flight.

A longer itinerary can also continue towards Iringa and Ruaha before flying to one of the islands.

IS UDZUNGWA RIGHT FOR YOU?

Udzungwa is a particularly good choice if you:

  • Enjoy hiking and being active

  • Want to see a different landscape after a safari

  • Would like to visit the Sanje Waterfalls

  • Are interested in primates, birds and rainforest

  • Want to combine Mikumi with a full-day nature experience

  • Prefer destinations with fewer visitors

  • Would like to add cycling or a village visit

Udzungwa may be less suitable if you have limited mobility, do not enjoy steep walks or mainly want to observe large safari animals.

In that case, an additional game-drive day in Mikumi may be the better choice.
