WHICH SAFARI CAN YOU DO FROM DAR ES SALAAM
There are several safari options from Dar es Salaam, depending on how much time you have, how you prefer to travel and what kind of experience you are looking for.
Nyerere and Mikumi are the easiest choices for a short safari, while Ruaha is better suited to travellers with a little more time or those who prefer to fly. You can also combine several parks, or include mountains, culture and the coast for a longer trip through Southern Tanzania.
NYERERE NATIONAL PARK
Best for: 3–4 days | Road or flight
Nyerere is around 4–5 hours from Dar es Salaam by road and offers more than traditional game drives. A safari can also include a boat safari on the Rufiji River and a walking safari, making it a great choice if you want a varied safari experience in just a few days.

MIKUMI NATIONAL PARK
Best for: 2–3 days | Road or SGR train
Mikumi is one of the easiest parks to combine with Dar es Salaam. You can travel by road, or take the SGR train to Morogoro and continue by car to the park. It is a particularly good option for a short safari and for families travelling with children.
RUAHA NATIONAL PARK
Best for: 4+ days | Flight or road
Ruaha is more remote and works best when you have a little more time. Flying from Dar es Salaam is the easiest option for a short Ruaha safari, while travelling overland makes it possible to combine Ruaha with Mikumi, Udzungwa and other parts of Southern Tanzania.
HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED FOR A SAFARI FROM DAR ES SALAAM?
Even with only a few days in Dar es Salaam, it is possible to add a safari to your trip. The best option depends on how much time you have and how much of that time you want to spend travelling.
2 DAYS - BEST FOR A QUICK SAFARI
With two days, Mikumi is usually the most practical choice from Dar es Salaam. Taking the early SGR train to Morogoro reduces the time spent on the road and gives you more time for safari.
A 2-day trip is short, but it works well if your time in Tanzania is limited.
5+ DAYS - COMBINE DIFFERENT PARKS
With five days or more, you can start combining destinations instead of choosing just one park. Mikumi can be combined with Ruaha or the Udzungwa Mountains, while Nyerere can form part of a longer journey through the south.
If you have one, two or even three weeks, Dar es Salaam can be the starting point for a complete tailor-made trip including safari, hiking, culture, the coast and Zanzibar.
GETTING FROM DAR ES SALAAM TO YOUR SAFARI
There is no single best way to start a safari from Dar es Salaam. Depending on the park, your available time and your budget, you can travel by road, take the SGR train for part of the journey or fly directly to the park.

BY ROAD
Travelling by private 4x4 gives you the most flexibility and makes it easy to combine several destinations in one trip.
Nyerere is around 4–5 hours from Dar es Salaam, while Mikumi usually takes around 6–8 hours depending on traffic.
For longer itineraries, travelling overland also allows you to continue towards Udzungwa, Iringa and Ruaha.
BY SGR TRAIN
The SGR train is a comfortable way to reduce the driving time when travelling towards Mikumi and Udzungwa.
The journey from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro takes less than two hours, where your driver can meet you and continue the journey by road.
We can include the train tickets and transfers as part of your safari.
BY DOMESTIC FLIGHT
Flying is the quickest option when you want to spend less time travelling, especially for Ruaha.
Domestic flights can also be used to connect Dar es Salaam with other destinations in Tanzania.
