SAFARI AND RAINFOREST ADVENTURE

This private four-day trip combines game drives in Mikumi National Park with a guided waterfall hike in the Udzungwa Mountains.
After an afternoon game drive on the first day, you have a full day to explore Mikumi with your private driver-guide. On Day 3, you travel to Udzungwa Mountains National Park for a guided hike through the rainforest before returning to the same accommodation near Mikumi.
This itinerary gives you time for both wildlife viewing and hiking without changing accommodation during the trip. On the final day, you return to Dar es Salaam by road or combine the journey with the SGR train from Morogoro where the schedule allows.
DAY 1

DAY 1: DRIVE TO MIKUMI AND AFTERNOON GAME DRIVE

Your private driver-guide will collect you from your accommodation in Dar es Salaam
early in the morning. The drive to Mikumi National Park normally takes
approximately 7 to 8 hours, depending on traffic and your pickup location.

Breakfast is not included. If required, you can stop along the way to buy
breakfast or local snacks. Lunch will be arranged during the journey or after
arriving in Mikumi. Depending on the schedule, this may be a picnic lunch or a
hot lunch.

You will then enter Mikumi National Park for an afternoon game drive. Your guide will plan the route according to the time available, recent wildlife sightings and the interests of your group.

Before the park closes, you will continue to your selected accommodation. Travellers staying inside the national park will continue to their lodge while game driving.

Meals included: Lunch for all packages. Dinner is included with the mid-range and luxury packages and paid directly when choosing the budget package.

Guests staying inside the park can begin directly from their accommodation.
If you are staying outside the park, your driver-guide will take you back to the
park entrance.

You will spend the day exploring different areas of Mikumi. Your private guide
will adapt the route to recent wildlife sightings, road conditions and the interests
of your group.

Lunch can be enjoyed at the restaurant inside the park or as a picnic. A picnic lunch allows you to explore areas farther away from the main entrance without returning to the restaurant.

Towards the end of the afternoon, you will return to your accommodation for dinner and your second overnight stay.

Meals included: breakfast and lunch for all packages. Dinner is included with the mid-range and luxury packages and paid directly when choosing the budget package.

After an early breakfast, you will travel to Udzungwa Mountains National Park. The
journey takes approximately two hours from Mikumi.

After arriving, you will meet your mountain guide and begin a guided hike
through the forest towards the waterfalls. The trail includes steep and uneven
sections, but there will be time to rest and enjoy the surroundings along the way.

During the hike, you can look for monkeys, birds, butterflies and different plant
species. You will have a packed lunch and time to relax near the waterfalls. Swimming
may be possible if conditions allow.

After completing the hike, you will drive back to your accommodation near Mikumi National Park. You will arrive in the evening for dinner and your third overnight stay.

Where the schedule allows, you can travel by jeep to Morogoro and continue to
Dar es Salaam by SGR train. Train tickets must be reserved in advance and can be
added to your personalised quotation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is this a private safari?
Yes. The safari vehicle and English-speaking driver-guide are private for your booking group. You will not be placed in a vehicle with other travellers.

Can I start the safari in Zanzibar?
Yes, but the standard prices are based on departure from Dar es Salaam. You can travel from Zanzibar by ferry or domestic flight before the safari, continue to Morogoro by train and then with the jeep to Mikumi. For a Mikumi safari, we usually recommend arriving in Dar es Salaam the previous day so the safari can depart early in the morning.
A direct fly-in safari from Zanzibar to Mikumi may also be possible, depending on flight schedules and availability. This follows a different itinerary and has a higher price.

Can I stay near Udzungwa after the hike?
Yes. We can arrange an overnight stay at Hondo Hondo near Udzungwa Mountains National Park instead of returning to Mikumi after the hike.
This reduces the driving time on Day 3, but the journey from Udzungwa to Dar es Salaam on Day 4 becomes considerably longer. We will explain both options and adjust the itinerary according to your preferences.

Can I reduce the travel time?
Yes! Not only by flight, which is possible but expensive, but now also by train. If you wish to make the travel time between Dar es Salaam and Mikumi National Park shorter, you can opt to take the SGR train from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro (under two hours travel time) and/or from Morogoro to Dar es Salaam. The travel time between Morogoro and Mikumi National Park is about two hours. This train is available at different times and classes. Ask us about the possibilities!

How difficult is the Udzungwa waterfall hike?
The Udzungwa hike is completed in one day but includes steep and uneven sections through the forest. The exact route can be adapted according to your fitness level, preferred walking distance and conditions in the park. Your guide will discuss the route with you before starting.

Can children join this safari?
Yes. Mikumi is suitable for families. Child discounts may apply depending on the children’s ages and the selected accommodation. Send us the ages of all children and your preferred room configuration so we can calculate the correct price.

Can the itinerary be changed?
Yes. We can adjust the accommodation, pickup location, travel arrangements and timing where possible.
We can also add another safari day, combine Mikumi with Udzungwa Mountains National Park or include Mikumi in a longer journey through Southern Tanzania.

Can I take a flight or ferry immediately after returning?
This depends on your departure time, chosen mode of transport and onward travel schedule. Tell us about any planned ferry or flight before booking. We will check the timing and advise whether you should return earlier, take the SGR train or stay another night in Dar es Salaam. If you don't add any activities to the last day, you can make it back for the last ferry to Zanzibar.

Are the prices fixed?
No. The prices shown are estimates. Your final price depends on your travel dates, group size, room configuration, child ages, accommodation availability and any additional services requested. You will receive a personalised quotation with the confirmed price before booking.
