You can take the ferry from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam and meet our driver-guide after arrival. From Dar es Salaam, your private safari continues by road.

This is usually the most budget-friendly option and works particularly well for Mikumi National Park, Nyerere National Park and longer combinations through Southern Tanzania.

We can arrange pickup from your hotel in Zanzibar, your ferry tickets and your transfer in Dar es Salaam. If you prefer to organise part of the journey yourself, we can also meet you directly at the ferry terminal.

Flight to Dar es Salaam, continue by road

A short domestic flight from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam is a convenient alternative to the ferry. We can arrange the flight and meet you at the airport before continuing your safari by road.

This option can make the transfer easier, while still keeping the safari more affordable than a direct fly-in itinerary.

Direct fly-in safari from Zanzibar

Direct domestic flights can connect Zanzibar with safari destinations such as Mikumi, Nyerere and Ruaha. This saves travel time and is particularly useful for travellers with a short holiday.

A direct fly-in safari is considerably more expensive than travelling through Dar es Salaam. We therefore compare the available options and explain the price difference before you decide.

For a safari focused only on Ruaha National Park, we recommend flying in and out because of the long distance from Dar es Salaam.

WHICH SAFARI IS BEST FROM ZANZIBAR?

Each national park has its own attractive characteristics. There really is not just 1 best park, but we can suggest different parks for different travellers with their own wishes and program.

Nyerere National Park

Nyerere, formerly known as Selous, is an excellent choice for combining safari and beach. Depending on your budget, you can travel through Dar es Salaam or fly directly from Zanzibar.

Nyerere offers classic game drives as well as incredible boat safaris on the Rufiji River. It is ideal for travellers who want varied wildlife activities and a quieter alternative to Tanzania’s northern safari circuit. It has a lush environment, very different to the usual dry plains you see in the other parks.

Best for: a short or longer safari, boat safaris, wildlife and a convenient Zanzibar combination with the least travel distance by road from Dar es Salaam.

Mikumi National Park

Mikumi is a good option for an affordable private safari from Zanzibar. You can travel by ferry or domestic flight to Dar es Salaam and continue by road or train, or choose a more expensive direct fly-in option.

The park’s open plains make wildlife easy to spot. Mikumi can also be combined with hiking in the Udzungwa Mountains or a longer journey towards Ruaha.

You can shorten the travel distance to Mikumi to about 4hours if you combine it with the highspeed train to Morogoro.

Best for: good value, first-time safari travellers and safari-and-hiking combinations.

Ruaha National Park

Ruaha is the best choice for travellers seeking remote wilderness, fewer vehicles and a deeper safari experience. Because Ruaha is much farther from Dar es Salaam, a Ruaha-only safari from Zanzibar is organised as a fly-in and fly-out trip.

Ruaha can also form part of a longer overland itinerary through Mikumi, Udzungwa, Iringa and Southern Tanzania.
