USAMBARA MOUNTAINS
HIKING, MOUNTAIN VILLAGES AND GREEN LANDSCAPES IN NORTHERN TANZANIA
The Usambara Mountains are one of our favourite places in Tanzania for travellers who enjoy walking, nature and local life.
You can use Lushoto as a base for day hikes and activities, travel further into the mountains towards Mambo, follow our multi-day trek from Lushoto to Mambo or explore the forests of the East Usambara Mountains.
There is no single way to experience the Usambaras. We adapt this part of your holiday to how active you want to be, how much time you have and where you are travelling next.

MORE THAN A HIKING DESTINATION
The Usambara Mountains cover a large area, so it is better to think of them as several destinations rather than one single place.
For most travellers, Lushoto is the easiest starting point. You can stay here for several nights and choose between different walks and activities without having to follow a fixed hiking programme.
Further into the West Usambara Mountains lies Mambo, a much more remote mountain village with spectacular views and very little tourism.
The East Usambara Mountains offer another experience again, with greener forest landscapes around places such as Magoroto and Amani.
This variety means we can make Usambara as active or relaxed as you want. You do not need to be an experienced trekker to include the mountains in your holiday.
LUSHOTO: THE MAIN BASE FOR WEST USAMBARA
Lushoto is the most practical base for exploring the West Usambara Mountains and has by far the widest choice of activities.
You can spend several days here without following a fixed itinerary. There are walks of different lengths, waterfalls, viewpoints, villages, farms and opportunities to learn more about life in the mountains.
Activities can include visits to Irente Viewpoint, waterfalls and forests, village walks, local markets, farm visits, food and coffee experiences and longer hikes through the surrounding landscape. There is even ziplining available in the area.
Because there is so much choice, we do not necessarily fill every day in Lushoto before you travel. We can arrange activities in advance if you prefer to have everything planned, but you can also keep your days flexible and decide locally what you feel like doing.
This makes Lushoto particularly suitable for travellers who want to explore the mountains without committing to a multi-day trek.
MAMBO: FURTHER INTO THE MOUNTAINS
Mambo lies further into the West Usambara Mountains and feels considerably more remote than Lushoto.
It is worth travelling here even if you are not doing the multi-day trek. Mambo can be reached by road from Lushoto, so it can simply be included as another stop in your itinerary.
One of the highlights is Mambo Viewpoint Eco Lodge, which we consider a destination in itself. Its location at the edge of the mountains provides spectacular views over the surrounding landscape.
There are also different activities available around Mambo, including hikes, village experiences, mountain biking and pottery.
For travellers with enough time, combining a few nights around Lushoto with Mambo gives a much broader experience of the West Usambara Mountains.
OUR 4-DAY LUSHOTO TO MAMBO TREK
For travellers who want to explore the mountains properly on foot, our 4-day trek from Lushoto to Mambo remains our preferred multi-day hiking route.
The trek passes through villages and mountain landscapes and finishes at Mambo Viewpoint.
DAY 1: LUSHOTO TO MKUZI
Approximately 5 hours of hiking.
The first day takes you from Lushoto towards Mkuzi, where you spend the night.
DAY 2: MKUZI TO LUKOZI
Approximately 6 hours of hiking.
Continue deeper into the mountains towards Lukozi for your second overnight stay.
DAY 3: LUKOZI TO RANGWI
Approximately 7 hours of hiking.
This is the longest hiking day, finishing around Rangwi, where an overnight stay at Rangwi Convent can form part of the experience.
DAY 4: RANGWI TO MAMBO
Approximately 5 hours of hiking.
The final stage brings you to Mambo, where you can finish the trek at Mambo Viewpoint Eco Lodge and enjoy the mountain views.
You do not necessarily have to carry all your luggage during the trek. Luggage transport can be arranged, or you can choose to carry your own belongings if you prefer.
EAST USAMBARA MOUNTAINS
The East Usambara Mountains offer a very different experience from Lushoto and Mambo in the west.
Here, the focus shifts towards tropical forest, biodiversity, birdlife and quiet nature experiences. Two of the most interesting destinations are Amani Nature Forest Reserve and Magoroto Forest Estate.
East Usambara combines particularly well with Tanga and the northern coast, but it is also possible to include both East and West Usambara in a longer itinerary.
AMANI NATURE FOREST RESERVE
Amani Nature Forest Reserve protects part of the exceptionally biodiverse forests of the East Usambara Mountains.
This is a destination for travellers who enjoy exploring slowly and paying attention to the smaller details of nature rather than looking for large safari animals. The forests are particularly rich in birdlife, butterflies, plants, frogs and chameleons, including species found only in this part of Tanzania.
There is plenty to explore on foot. Activities include guided forest hikes, birdwatching, waterfalls and viewpoints, while night walks offer the chance to search for chameleons, frogs and other forest wildlife. The area also has tea plantations and spice farms. Tanzania Fire Services
Another interesting part of Amani is its history. The reserve contains one of East Africa's oldest botanical gardens, with more than 1,000 plant species, as well as remnants connected to the area's colonial and scientific past.
Amani is particularly interesting for nature lovers, birdwatchers and travellers who want to explore a very green and little-visited part of Tanzania.
MAGOROTO FOREST ESTATE
Magoroto offers another way to experience the East Usambara Mountains, combining forest and mountain scenery with a freshwater lake.
There are different activities available, including forest walks, waterfalls, swimming and lake activities, birdwatching, biking, fishing and spice-related experiences.
It can also simply be a place to slow down and enjoy the surroundings rather than filling every day with activities.
HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED?
We recommend at least three nights if you want to include the Usambara Mountains in your holiday.
With three nights, Lushoto can work well as your main base with time for several activities.
With four or five nights, there is more room for longer walks, cultural experiences and a slower pace.
With more time, you can continue from Lushoto towards Mambo, complete the 4-day trek or combine the West and East Usambara Mountains.
There is no fixed ideal length because the area offers enough to fill anything from a few active days to a much longer mountain stay.
WHERE TO STAY
Accommodation varies considerably depending on which part of the Usambara Mountains you visit.
In Lushoto, we use options including The Lawns Hotel, Irente Farm Lodge and David's Crater Homestay, alongside other accommodation depending on availability and the type of stay you prefer.
In Mambo, Mambo Viewpoint Eco Lodge is one of our favourite options and is worth including for its location and experience, not simply as somewhere to sleep.
During the 4-day trek, accommodation is simpler and forms part of the hiking experience, with stops around Mkuzi, Lukozi and Rangwi before reaching Mambo.
The East Usambara Mountains have their own accommodation around places such as Magoroto and Amani.
HOW TO REACH THE USAMBARA MOUNTAINS

BY ROAD
The Usambara Mountains can be incorporated into a longer road journey through Northern and Coastal Tanzania.
From Dar es Salaam, the journey to Lushoto is relatively long, but it can be done by private vehicle.
A more gradual route can include Bagamoyo, Saadani, Pangani or Tanga before continuing towards the mountains.

FROM KILIMANJARO AIRPORT
Usambara can also form part of an itinerary starting around Kilimanjaro International Airport.
One possible route is to travel from Kilimanjaro towards Mkomazi National Park, continue into the Usambara Mountains and afterwards travel south towards Tanga, Pangani, Saadani, Bagamoyo and Dar es Salaam.

TRANSPORT DURING YOUR TRIP
We are flexible in how we arrange transport.
For most of our longer private holidays, you travel with your vehicle and guide and the jeep remains available while you explore the region.
For longer stays in the mountains, it may make more sense to arrange a private transfer or use bus transport rather than keeping a safari vehicle nearby for an entire week.
Domestic flights and other connections can also be incorporated where they make sense for the wider itinerary.
WHEN TO VISIT USAMBARA MOUNTAINS
The mountains can be visited during much of the year, but conditions are important when hiking.
We generally prefer to avoid planning hiking-focused Usambara programmes during the wetter period from March to May.
Rain can also occur in November and early December, although travel is still possible depending on the programme and conditions.
The cooler mountain climate is part of the appeal of Usambara, particularly for travellers combining the area with Tanzania's warmer safari parks and coast.
COMBINING USAMBARA WITH OTHER DESTINATIONS

DAR ES SALAAM
Usambara Mountains can be reached directly from Dar es Salaam or included towards the beginning or end of a longer overland holiday.

BAGAMOYO
Bagamoyo makes an interesting historical stop before or after the Usambara Mountains and also helps break up the longer road journey towards Dar es Salaam.

SAADANI NATIONAL PARK
Saadani can be incorporated between the northern coast and Bagamoyo, combining wildlife and the coast in the same wider route.

PANGANI
After hiking in the mountains, Pangani provides a quieter coastal stay and works naturally on a journey south towards Dar es Salaam.

TANGA
Tanga works particularly well with the East Usambara Mountains and can form part of a route continuing towards the coast.

MKOMAZI NATIONAL PARK
Mkomazi and Usambara are a particularly logical safari-and-mountains combination. The Usambara Mountains are visible from parts of the park, and the two destinations work naturally together in an overland itinerary.
USAMBARA WITH CHILDREN
The Usambara Mountains can certainly be included in a family holiday, particularly with older children who enjoy walking and being active.
Lushoto is the easiest option because activities can be adapted to the age and energy level of the children. You do not have to commit to long hiking days and can choose shorter walks and other activities instead.
For families with very young children, we are more cautious about recommending Usambara. The destination itself is not the problem, but the relatively long travel days required to reach the mountains can make it less convenient than destinations such as Mikumi.
We therefore look at the children's ages and the complete route before recommending how much time to spend here.
IS USAMBARA RIGHT FOR YOU?
The Usambara Mountains are particularly interesting if you:
-
Enjoy walking, hiking and spending time outdoors
-
Want to experience rural Tanzania away from the main tourist circuit
-
Like having a choice of activities rather than following a fixed programme
-
Want to combine nature with villages and local culture
-
Are interested in a multi-day trek without travelling to Tanzania's busier trekking destinations
-
Want to combine mountains with Mkomazi or the northern coast
-
Have enough time to make the journey part of a wider Tanzania holiday
If you only have a very short holiday or are travelling with very young children, the long journey to Usambara may make another hiking destination more practical.

We recommend at least three nights. Four or five nights gives you more time for activities and a slower pace, while longer stays allow you to combine Lushoto with Mambo or explore both West and East Usambara.

Yes. You can plan your activities with us in advance or keep your stay flexible and decide locally what you would like to do.

PLAN YOUR USAMBARA MOUNTAINS ADVENTURE
We do not use one fixed Usambara programme for everyone.
Tell us how much time you have, how active you want to be and where you are travelling before and after the mountains. We can build your stay around Lushoto, Mambo, the 4-day trek, East Usambara or a combination of them.
