Estimated prices for a private two-day Mikumi safari:

The lower end of each range applies to six travellers sharing the private safari costs.

The budget prices are based on Chambo Villas outside the national park.

The mid-range prices are based on Camp Lilac outside the national park.

The luxury prices are based on Wellworth Mikumi Wildlife Lodge inside the national park.

All prices are estimates. Your final price depends on your travel dates, group size, room configuration, accommodation availability and any changes requested.

A SHORT SAFARI FROM DAR ES SALAAM

Mikumi National Park is a practical choice for a short safari from Dar es Salaam. This private two-day programme includes an afternoon and a morning game drive, with accommodation inside or outside the park.

The road journey normally takes approximately seven to eight hours. Where the train schedule allows, you can take the SGR train to Morogoro in under two hours and continue to Mikumi by car, which takes approximately another two hours.

For a more relaxed journey with a full day of game driving, consider extending the safari to three days.

DAY 1

DAY 1: DRIVE TO MIKUMI AND AFTERNOON GAME DRIVE

Your private driver-guide will collect you from your accommodation in Dar es Salaam

early in the morning. The drive to Mikumi National Park normally takes

approximately 7 to 8 hours, depending on traffic and your pickup location.

Breakfast is not included. If required, you can stop along the way to buy

breakfast or local snacks. Lunch will be arranged during the journey or after

arriving in Mikumi. Depending on the schedule, this may be a picnic lunch or a

hot lunch.

You will then enter Mikumi National Park for an afternoon game drive. Your guide will plan the route according to the time available, recent wildlife sightings and the interests of your group.

Before the park closes, you will continue to your selected accommodation. Travellers staying inside the national park will continue to their lodge while game driving.

Meals included: lunch and dinner for the mid-range and luxury packages. Dinner is paid directly when choosing the budget package.

DAY 2

DAY 2: MORNING GAME DRIVE AND RETURN TO DAR ES SALAAM

After breakfast, you will begin your morning game drive. If you are staying inside

Mikumi National Park, the game drive starts directly from your accommodation.

If you are staying outside the park, your guide will take you back to the entrance

before beginning the game drive.

You will explore the park until late morning or around midday. Because the

vehicle and guide are private for your group, the route can be adapted to the

available time and recent wildlife sightings.

After leaving the national park, you will have lunch and begin the drive back to Dar es Salaam.

Arrival is expected during the evening, depending on traffic and the location of your accommodation.

Please tell us if you have a flight, ferry or another transfer planned after the safari. We will check whether the timing is realistic before confirming the itinerary.

Meals included: breakfast and lunch.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is this a private safari?

Yes. The safari vehicle and English-speaking driver-guide are private for your booking group. You will not be placed in a vehicle with other travellers.

Can I start the safari in Zanzibar?

Yes, but the standard prices are based on departure from Dar es Salaam. You can travel from Zanzibar by ferry or domestic flight before the safari, continue to Morogoro by train and then with the jeep to Mikumi. For a 2-day itinerary, we usually recommend arriving in Dar es Salaam the previous day so the safari can depart early in the morning.

A direct fly-in safari from Zanzibar to Mikumi may also be possible, depending on flight schedules and availability. This follows a different itinerary and has a higher price.

Is two days enough for Mikumi National Park?

This programme is suitable for travellers who have limited time and want a short safari from Dar es Salaam. It includes two half-day game drives. There is a considerable amount of travel on both days. If you have an additional day available, the three-day safari offers a more relaxed journey and includes a full day of game driving.

Can I reduce the travel time?

Yes! Not only by flight, which is possible but expensive, but now also by train. If you wish to make the travel time between Dar es Salaam and Mikumi National Park shorter, you can opt to take the SGR train from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro (under two hours travel time) and/or from Morogoro to Dar es Salaam. The travel time between Morogoro and Mikumi National Park is about two hours. This train is available at different times and classes. Ask us about the possibilities!

How do the national park passes work?

National park permits are time-limited. The number of permits required depends on where you stay and the timing of your game drives. For accommodation outside the park, the quotation includes the park entries required for both game drives. For accommodation inside the park, the itinerary is planned around the validity of one park permit (valid for 24 hours). We calculate the correct park fees when preparing your personalised quotation.

Can children join this safari?

Yes. Mikumi is suitable for families. Child discounts may apply depending on the children’s ages and the selected accommodation. Send us the ages of all children and your preferred room configuration so we can calculate the correct price.

Can the itinerary be changed?

Yes. We can adjust the accommodation, pickup location, travel arrangements and timing where possible.

We can also extend the safari to three days, combine Mikumi with Udzungwa Mountains National Park or include Mikumi in a longer journey through Southern Tanzania.

Can I take a flight or ferry immediately after returning?

We do not recommend booking an international flight on the evening of your return. Traffic between Mikumi and Dar es Salaam can be unpredictable. A 2-day safari with a game drive on the last day does not allow you to be back on time in Dar es Salaam for a ferry or flight to Zanzibar, even if you would take the train to reduce travel time. You will need to plan one night in Dar es Salaam or another location on the mainland nearby on the second day.
