DISCOVER MAFIA ISLAND
Mafia Island is very different from Zanzibar. It is smaller, quieter and much less developed for tourism, with much of the experience centred around the ocean and Mafia Island Marine Park.
This is not the island we would choose if you are looking for lots of restaurants, nightlife or a busy resort area. Mafia is better suited to travellers who enjoy nature, diving and snorkelling, small-scale accommodation and a much slower pace.
The island is particularly known for its marine life and seasonal whale shark encounters, but there is more to Mafia than what happens underwater. Chole Island, local villages, quiet beaches and days on the water all add to the experience.
We especially like Mafia as an alternative island ending after a safari in southern Tanzania. With domestic flights connecting the island with the mainland, it can fit naturally into a longer Tanzania journey.
WHY VISIT MAFIA ISLAND?
MARINE LIFE
Mafia is one of Tanzania's strongest marine destinations. The protected waters around the island are home to coral reefs and rich marine life, making Mafia particularly interesting for diving and snorkelling.
WHALE SHARKS
Mafia is one of Tanzania's best-known destinations for whale shark encounters. The main season generally runs from October to March, when whale sharks can be found in the waters around the island.
Sightings are completely natural and can never be guaranteed, but for travellers visiting at the right time of year this can be one of the highlights of Mafia.
PEACE & QUIET
Tourism remains small-scale. There is no equivalent of Paje or Nungwi here, and that is exactly the point. Mafia is somewhere to slow down rather than somewhere to fill every evening with restaurants and nightlife.
MAFIA ISLAND MARINE PARK
Mafia Island Marine Park protects an important part of the waters and coastline around the southeast of Mafia, including Chole Bay.
Coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass and sheltered waters support a rich marine ecosystem and make this the main area for diving and snorkelling.
Many of Mafia's established lodges are located around Utende inside the Marine Park. Kinasi and Pole Pole, for example, both overlook Chole Bay and use this area as their base for marine activities.
Marine Park fees apply when staying in or visiting the protected area. We take this into account when preparing your trip and make clear in your proposal which fees are included and which need to be paid locally.
THINGS TO DO ON MAFIA ISLAND
SWIM WITH WHALE SHARKS
During the season, boat trips head out in search of whale sharks. Encounters take place by snorkelling rather than diving, allowing you to experience these enormous fish in their natural environment.
CHOLE ISLAND
Cross the narrow channel to Chole Island to experience village life and another side of the Mafia Archipelago. Cultural and historical excursions around Chole are offered locally from the Marine Park area.
DIVING
Mafia's protected marine environment is a major reason divers travel to the island. Mafia Island accommodations operate or work with local dive centres, so diving can easily become the main focus of a stay.
BOAT TRIPS & SANDBANKS
Depending on the tides and conditions, boat trips can combine snorkelling, sandbanks, quiet beaches and time on the water.
SNORKELLING
You don't need to dive to enjoy Mafia's underwater life. Snorkelling trips can be arranged locally and work well as a more accessible way to explore the reefs.
BEACH & RELAXATION
Not every day needs an activity. Mafia works particularly well when you leave some of the itinerary open and decide locally what you feel like doing.
WHERE TO STAY ON MAFIA ISLAND
Choosing the right area can make a big difference to your Zanzibar experience. The island is not huge, but the atmosphere, beaches, tides and style of accommodation vary considerably from one coast to another.
These are the areas we usually discuss with travellers when planning their trip.
UTENDE & THE MARINE PARK
BEST FOR DIVING, SNORKELLING & CHOLE BAY
Utende is the obvious choice when the Marine Park and underwater activities are the main reason for your stay. Several of Mafia's best-rated lodges are here.
The disadvantage is that Marine Park fees need to be taken into account, so this is not automatically the cheapest way to stay on Mafia.
KILINDONI
LOCAL LIFE & EASY ACCESS TO WHALE SHARK TRIPS
Kilindoni is Mafia's main town and gives a more local experience than the Marine Park area. It can also be a practical base for whale shark excursions during the season.
Accommodation outside the Marine Park can be useful when you want to keep costs lower or when diving is not the main purpose of the trip.
CHOLE ISLAND
SMALL-SCALE & DIFFERENT
Staying on Chole gives you an even smaller-scale island experience, separated from the main island by a short boat crossing.
It is an interesting choice for travellers who deliberately want something unusual rather than a conventional beach resort.
MAFIA OR ZANZIBAR?
CHOOSE MAFIA IF...
MARINE LIFE IS THE PRIORITY
Mafia is particularly interesting if diving, snorkelling or whale sharks are an important reason for choosing your island. The experience is much more centred around the ocean than on Zanzibar.
YOU WANT PEACE & QUIET
Tourism is much smaller in scale. There are fewer hotels, restaurants and organised activities, but also far fewer visitors. Mafia suits travellers who are genuinely happy with a slower island stay.
YOU PREFER SMALL-SCALE
Mafia feels less developed for tourism and accommodation is generally more spread out and small-scale. It works especially well if you are happy spending your evenings at your lodge rather than going out.
CHOOSE ZANZIBAR IF...
YOU WANT MORE VARIETY
Zanzibar gives you much more choice in beaches, hotels, restaurants and activities. You can combine Stone Town with different coastal areas and easily make the island a bigger part of your holiday.
RESTAURANTS & ACTIVITIES MATTER
Paje, Jambiani, Nungwi and other tourist areas offer much more to do outside your hotel. Zanzibar is the easier choice if you like deciding each day where to eat and what activity to try.
YOU WANT BEACH + CULTURE
Zanzibar offers a stronger combination of beach holiday and cultural sightseeing, particularly when you include one or two nights in Stone Town.
WHICH ONE WOULD WE CHOOSE?
There is no better island, only a better fit for your trip.
For a first visit to Tanzania, Zanzibar often gives you more variety and comfort.
If you have already decided that marine life, diving and quiet are more important than restaurants and activities, Mafia can be the much better choice.
HOW MANY DAYS ON MAFIA?
3 NIGHTS // A short extension
Possible, but relatively short once flights and transfers are taken into account.
4–5 NIGHTS // A good balance
Enough time for marine activities, an excursion or two and relaxed days without having to plan something every day.
6+ NIGHTS // Take it slowly
Particularly worthwhile for divers or travellers who specifically want a very relaxed island ending.
COMBINING MAFIA WITH SAFARI
Mafia works particularly well as an island ending after safari. Which park combines best depends on how much time you have, your budget and whether you prefer to travel by road or fly between destinations.
We plan the safari and island stay together, so the route is built around the domestic flight connections rather than treating Mafia as a separate trip.
NYERERE NATIONAL PARK
THE EASIEST SAFARI & MAFIA COMBINATION
Nyerere is the easiest park to combine with Mafia Island. Scheduled bush flights make it possible to travel between the national park and Mafia.
This makes the combination particularly interesting if you want a relatively compact trip: game drives, a boat safari and other safari activities in Nyerere, followed by several quiet days focused on the Indian Ocean and marine life.
Depending on your itinerary, you can start in Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar, safari in Nyerere and continue by air to Mafia.
RUAHA NATIONAL PARK
FROM REMOTE WILDERNESS TO THE INDIAN OCEAN
Ruaha and Mafia make a very different combination: one of Tanzania's wildest safari areas followed by one of its quietest islands.
Flying is the practical way to connect the two. Scheduled bush flights can link Ruaha with Mafia, although the journey may include some extra stops on the way.
We particularly like this combination for travellers who prefer quality over rushing through several parks. Spend several days properly exploring Ruaha, then change the pace completely on Mafia.

MIKUMI NATIONAL PARK
A MORE AFFORDABLE SAFARI & ISLAND COMBINATION
Mikumi can also be combined with Mafia, but the route works differently. Rather than flying between the park and the island, we normally connect Mikumi with Dar es Salaam first.
Mikumi can be reached from Dar by road or by combining the SGR train to Morogoro with a road transfer. After safari, you return towards Dar es Salaam and continue to Mafia by domestic flight.
This can make Mikumi + Mafia an interesting option when you want to combine safari and island time while keeping the safari part more affordable than a fly-in safari.
WHICH SAFARI COMBINES BEST WITH MAFIA?
Choose Nyerere if you want the smoothest safari-and-island combination and a varied safari with game drives, boat safari and walking possibilities.
Choose Ruaha if wildlife and wilderness are the priority and you don't mind spending more for a more remote safari and flight connections.
Choose Mikumi if you want to keep the safari more accessible and affordable and don't mind travelling back through Dar es Salaam before flying to Mafia.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION
EXPECT A SLOWER PACE
Come to Mafia because you want quiet. If restaurants, shopping and nightlife are important parts of your island holiday, Zanzibar will probably suit you better.
MONEY
Mafia has much less tourism infrastructure than the mainland. Carrying some cash for local expenses is useful rather than relying entirely on cards or ATMs.
MARINE PARK FEES
Additional Marine Park fees may apply depending on where you stay and which activities you do. We explain these clearly when preparing your quotation.
BOOKING ACTIVITIES
Diving, snorkelling, whale shark trips and other marine excursions can often be organised directly through your accommodation. We prefer to leave some flexibility for weather, tides and sea conditions.
GETTING TO MAFIA ISLAND
BY AIR
Flying is the way we recommend travelling to Mafia.
Domestic flights connect Mafia with Dar es Salaam, with several options available depending on the day and season. We check the actual schedule when planning your journey rather than building an itinerary around fixed times published far in advance.
BY FERRY
Local sea connections with the mainland exist, but we do not normally use them for our international travellers. Flying is much easier to integrate reliably into a larger Tanzania itinerary.

When can you see whale sharks on Mafia Island?
The main whale shark season generally runs from October to March. They are wild animals, so sightings can never be guaranteed. Mafia Island
Is Mafia better than Zanzibar?
Neither is better. Zanzibar has far more hotels, restaurants and activities. Mafia is quieter and particularly interesting for marine life, diving and whale sharks.
Do I need to be a diver?
No. Snorkelling, whale shark excursions, boat trips, Chole Island and relaxed island days also make Mafia interesting for non-divers.
How many nights do you recommend?
Usually around four to six nights, depending on the rest of your Tanzania trip and how important diving is to you.
Can I combine Mafia with a safari?
Yes. Nyerere and Mafia are a particularly good combination if you want both safari and marine life in one journey. You can also combine Mafia island with the other southern national parks.
Do you arrange the flights?
Yes. When Mafia is part of a tailor-made trip, we can arrange the domestic flights and transfers together with the rest of your itinerary.
