How Do You Get to the National Parks from Zanzibar?

One of the biggest questions travellers have is how easy it is to reach Tanzania's national parks from Zanzibar. The answer depends on which park you choose, your budget, and how much travel time you're comfortable with.

Nyerere National Park: The Closest Safari from Zanzibar

If you're looking for the shortest overland journey, Nyerere National Park is the best choice.

After arriving in Dar es Salaam by a short domestic flight or ferry from Zanzibar, it's approximately a 5-hour drive to the park. This makes Nyerere the closest national park to Dar es Salaam and an excellent option for travelers who prefer to keep travel time to a minimum.

For those with a larger budget, there are also scheduled flights directly into the park, allowing you to maximize your time on safari.

Mikumi National Park: Easier Than You Might Think

Although Mikumi is one of Tanzania's most popular safari destinations, many websites don't mention that the drive from Dar es Salaam can take 7–8 hours, depending on traffic. If you're coming from Zanzibar, driving the entire route would make for a very long travel day.

Fortunately, there's now a much more comfortable option. We recommend taking Tanzania's modern Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro. The train journey takes less than two hours and offers a comfortable, air-conditioned ride.

After arriving in Morogoro, your guide will meet you at the station, and it's approximately another 2-hour drive to Mikumi National Park.

Instead of spending most of the day on the road, you'll reach Mikumi in around half a day while enjoying a far more relaxed journey. This has become one of our favourite travel options, especially for families with children.

Ruaha National Park: Worth the Journey

Ruaha National Park is often considered one of Tanzania's most spectacular safari destinations. Its dramatic landscapes, huge elephant herds, and exceptional predator sightings make it a favourite among experienced safari travelers.

However, it is also t

he most remote of the three parks.

The quickest way to reach Ruaha is by domestic flight, making it a fantastic option if your budget allows.

For travelers exploring Southern Tanzania by road, Ruaha combines perfectly with Mikumi National Park. From Mikumi, it's approximately half a day's drive to Ruaha, allowing you to experience two very different ecosystems during one safari.

Combining Flights and Road Travel

One of the advantages of exploring Southern Tanzania is the flexibility.

Many travelers choose to:

• Travel from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam by ferry or flight.

• Visit Mikumi or Nyerere by road (or train and road in the case of Mikumi).

• Continue to Ruaha by road or domestic flight.

• Fly back to Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam at the end of the safari.

There are also scheduled flights connecting the Southern Circuit parks, making it possible to reduce travel time while experiencing multiple national parks in a single itinerary.
