MOUNTAINS ON THE EDGE OF MOROGORO
The Uluguru Mountains rise directly behind Morogoro and offer a completely different experience from the safari parks of Southern Tanzania.
Here, the focus is on exploring on foot. Trails lead through green mountain landscapes, villages and farmland towards viewpoints and waterfalls.
Morogoro itself makes a practical base for exploring the mountains, but it does not have to be only an overnight stop on the way to safari. You can spend some time exploring the town with a local guide, hike into the mountains or simply slow the journey down before continuing towards Mikumi National Park.
For travellers who enjoy walking, we particularly recommend our full-day hike or 2-day hiking and camping experience.
THE ULUGURU MOUNTAINS DAY HIKE
Our full-day Uluguru hike combines Morningsite, Choma Waterfalls and village life in the mountains.
You start with the hike towards Morningsite, which takes approximately 2.5 hours and covers around 8 kilometres. After arriving at Morningsite, there is time for a short break before continuing towards Choma.
The hike from Morningsite towards Choma Waterfalls is approximately 2 kilometres and takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes.
At the waterfalls, there is time to relax, take photographs and swim.
Afterwards, you begin the descent towards Morogoro via Kireka village, where you stop for lunch. From Choma Waterfalls, the walk back towards Morogoro takes approximately another 2 hours and covers around 8 kilometres.
The day combines mountain scenery, hiking, waterfalls and village life and can easily be incorporated into a longer Southern Tanzania itinerary.
A 2-DAY ULUGURU MOUNTAINS ADVENTURE
If you would like to spend more time in the mountains, our 2-day hike adds an overnight camping experience.
DAY 1: MOROGORO TO MORNINGSITE
The adventure starts with an approximately 2.5-hour hike to Morningsite, where you set up camp and have time to explore the surroundings with your guide.
You spend the afternoon in the mountains and finish the day around the campfire with dinner before sleeping in your tent.
DAY 2: CHOMA VILLAGE AND WATERFALLS
The following morning, you continue towards Choma village.
Here, there are opportunities to learn more about local life and participate in traditional activities such as weaving or pottery. A visit to a traditional healer can also be incorporated for travellers who are interested.
You then continue towards the waterfalls, where there is time to swim and enjoy the surroundings.
The adventure finishes with an approximately 2-hour walk back towards Morogoro town.
MOROGORO
Morogoro is often treated simply as a stop on the road between Dar es Salaam and Tanzania's southern national parks, but there is more reason to spend time here.
The town sits directly beneath the Uluguru Mountains and can be explored with a local guide. This can be incorporated before or after a hike or as part of a slower day in Morogoro.
It also works well as an overnight stop when travelling between Dar es Salaam and Mikumi, allowing you to break up the journey rather than spending the entire day on the road.
MBUYUNI FARM RETREAT
For travellers who would like to slow down for a little longer, Mbuyuni Farm Retreat is another option in the wider Morogoro area.
Rather than treating it simply as accommodation for the night, Mbuyuni can be included as a destination in its own right.
It works particularly well for travellers who want to add some quiet time in nature to a holiday that otherwise includes hiking, safari and travelling between destinations.
HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED?
If your main priority is hiking, one full day is enough to experience our popular Morningsite and Choma Waterfalls route.
For travellers who enjoy camping and want more time in the mountains, the 2-day Uluguru hike is a good alternative.
You can also spend additional time in Morogoro itself or combine the mountains with a stay at Mbuyuni Farm Retreat.
The amount of time we recommend therefore depends less on a fixed number of days and more on whether you want Uluguru to be a single hiking day or a larger part of your holiday.
WHERE TO STAY
Morogoro has a range of accommodation options and makes a convenient base for exploring the Uluguru Mountains. You can stay in town, closer to the mountains or choose a quieter stay surrounded by nature.
We work with different accommodation options depending on your budget, preferred comfort level and the rest of your itinerary. For travellers who want to slow down and spend more time in the area, places such as Mbuyuni Farm Retreat can also become part of the experience rather than simply an overnight stop.
HOW TO REACH THE ULUGURU MOUNTAINS

FROM MIKUMI
Morogoro and the Uluguru Mountains can easily be combined with Mikumi National Park.
This creates a natural combination of hiking and safari and can be organised in either direction depending on the rest of your holiday.

FROM DAR ES SALAAM
Morogoro can be reached from Dar es Salaam by private road transport.
This works particularly well when the Uluguru Mountains form part of a longer overland holiday continuing towards Mikumi and other destinations in Southern Tanzania.

BY SGR TRAIN
The SGR provides another convenient way to travel between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro.
The train journey takes less than two hours on suitable services, making it possible to avoid a much longer road journey out of Dar es Salaam.
We can arrange the SGR tickets and the necessary transfers as part of your itinerary.
WHEN TO VISIT ULURUGU MOUNTAINS
JUNE TO OCTOBER
The dry season generally provides the easiest hiking conditions.
Trails are normally less muddy, although the waterfall may carry less water towards the end of the dry season. Temperatures can still feel warm and humid during the climb.
NOVEMBER TO FEBRUARY
The landscape becomes greener, and occasional rainfall can increase the flow of the waterfalls.
Hiking is normally still possible, but rain can make the trail slippery. Birdlife and forest vegetation can be especially rewarding during this period.
MARCH TO MAY
The long rains usually occur during these months.
The waterfalls can be impressive, but trails may become wet, muddy and more difficult. Heavy rainfall can affect road access and hiking arrangements.
We check the weather, road conditions and park access before confirming your visit.
COMBINING UDZUNGWA WITH OTHER DESTINATIONS

DAR ES SALAAM
Morogoro is easily incorporated into a holiday starting or ending in Dar es Salaam.
Rather than travelling directly from the city towards safari, you can break up the journey with time in Morogoro and the Uluguru Mountains.

UDZUNGWA MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK
For travellers who particularly enjoy hiking, Uluguru and Udzungwa offer two very different experiences.
Uluguru combines mountain scenery, waterfalls and village life, while Udzungwa is a protected forest environment with rainforest, primates and the Sanje Waterfalls.

MIKUMI NATIONAL PARK
Uluguru and Mikumi are one of the easiest hiking-and-safari combinations in Southern Tanzania.
Spend a day or two exploring the mountains before continuing to the open landscapes and wildlife of Mikumi National Park, or visit the mountains on your way back towards Dar es Salaam.

NYERERE NATIONAL PARK
Uluguru can also form part of a wider Southern Tanzania itinerary that includes Nyerere National Park, depending on the complete route.

MBUYUNI FARM RETREAT
Mbuyuni can be added for travellers who want to slow the programme down and spend more time surrounded by nature before continuing their journey.

ZANZIBAR, PEMBA AND MAFIA
After exploring the mainland, the holiday can continue towards one of Tanzania's islands via Dar es Salaam.
